Cooling off at the Cahaba Riverwalk
The first event of the Friends of the Cahaba Riverwalk took place on Sunday September 16th at the Grants Mill Road Bridge Riverwalk under blue sky and cool temperatures. The event called “Coolin’ Off at the Cahaba Riverwalk,” was put together in order to introduce the Irondale community to this wonderful nature trail that is the first of its kind in the Birmingham area.
The theme of the Event was River awareness and several environmental groups set up displays to educate the public about the importance of the Cahaba River, its beauty and bio diversity and the threats that the river faces.

Elizabeth Simms from the Freshwater Land Trust, the organization that actually owns the Riverwalk property, educated people on the partnership that was formed with the Land trust and the City of Irondale to make the Riverwalk a reality.
Dr. Randy Haddock and Gordon Black from the Cahaba River Society had all the kids in the river netting fish and crawdads and learning about the unique aquatic life.
Paul Freeman of the Nature Conservancy had a wonderful display showing the great work that TNC does throughout the state.
Liz Salter from the Alabama River Alliance told the all too familiar story about the pressures put on the Cahaba and all the Rivers in Alabama due to economic growth and development.
Among the notable attendees were Mayor Tommy Joe Alexander, City Councilmen Mark Peavy and John Schoen.
